THING 23

I DID IT! AND! I'm glad that I did. I truly consider this quite an accomplishment for the summer. I was introduced to a number of apps, tricks, and techniques for Web 2.0 of which I knew nothing in June. I don't really feel proficient in very many of the THINGS but I'm not worried about that. I've taken good notes & have my blog to which I can refer if I need help in a task. I do believe that many of the THINGS are easily applicable to education and library skills.

QUESTIONS:
1) LibraryThing & RSS
2) Increased the arrows in my quiver. I think I am a LLL and my example is that I decided to become a school librarian at age 62.
3) Some of the tasks took longer than I wanted them to but it's user error -- not 23THINGS. For instance, I've created 2 stories for THING21 that I haven't been able to publish because I can't get technical details to work. But -- I'll get the 3rd one published!
4) I think I might like doing 23THINGS during the school year in a group with a schedule of 3THINGS/month in stead of 3THINGS/week. However, the intensity probably helped productivity. I just wish I felt proficient in more THINGS.
5) Yes
6) 23THINGS expanded my knowledge.
7) I'm really not good at looking at other blogs -- but I'm gonna get better!

THING 22

NING -- and the world of internet community.

I like it and I appreciate the individuals who contribute information. NING is very user-friendly and does seem to be for discriminating souls. One of the NING's at which I looked was on travel and I was able to see more information about Petra. I also looked at some of the ones on education and libraries. Perhaps all social networks do this -- but I really liked having the information about the members available.

Maybe it's just because I'm an old lady -- or maybe because I'm a Type A personality but the amount of time it takes to be a part of a social network intimidates me. But then, I probably don't keep up w/face-to-face friends like I should either. Again, I like finding out information -- but don't immediately think about checking a social network on the computer. Maybe I will now that I have an RSS.

THING 20A

This is also about THING 20 because I don't want to mess up the posting w/the embedded video. I'm not quite sure how I did it -- but there it is! I like the feature but need to perform the exercise more than once in order to be sure I know what I'm doing.

This exercise did answer my queries and concerns about allowing students full access to things like YouTube. I'm moving on!

THING 20

This my 2nd time to try to embed a video. I really don't want to write anything here until I'm sure that my video will play.

THING 19

I know -- I know-- I'm the only person on the planet you hasn't explored YouTube but there you are. I guess I thought I needed to work or eat or READ or something else. I've played with YouTube & searched for Petra again. Found some neat videos and info about that exciting place. I've looked at lulu.com & even though I don't have anything to publish, I do have some friends who might; I'll tell them about this site. I explored shows on YouTube & found a jillion Paddington videos. And then I played games. I couldn't get on zango.com (it wouldn't ever download); I went on Galaxiki -- but I'm not into scifi -- if that's even a genre anymore. Doof was fun: I played a crummy game of Mahjong but was invited to play again so they were nice. Does this cost money? Saw a game called WORDS that I'll go back to.

Interesting website -- and, goodness! so many things to do. But, WHEN AM I SUPPOSED TO READ MY BOOK??? All of this stuff is fun & interesting -- but it is surely cutting into my available reading time.

USEFUL PARTS FOR SCHOOLS & LIBRARIES: I'm not sure because I don't know how to filter these sites. I'm not sure that all of them would be available (thank goodness!) at HISD schools. And I'm not sure I'm ready to let my 5th graders just go look at some of these sites.

What am I missing? I'll read some other blogs & see if other 23THINGERS have had the same reaction I did to this site.

THING 18

Thank you very much! I've just added Openoffice.org to my Desktop & tried out some of the apps. (See -- I said "apps" because I can talk computerese.) which look & act so much like Microsoft Office products that they are a snap to use. I had already used GoogleDocs when I explored "More" and "Even More" under Google. Lots of stuff to make my life easier.

THING 17

Really like ROLLYO! I created a searchroll for Petra because we are planning a trip to Jordon & Israel. It is really easy to use -- and much easier to shift through than Google.

I also really appreciated & enjoyed the video by Bruce Goodner. Made the entire process very clear.

I'm hoping that I can create a SEARCHROLL using the HISD search engines -- I think. Or, maybe I'd rather create SEARCHROLLS using other search engines for specific topics. I've got to think about how to use this tool effectively -- but I love it!

THING16

Now, this is fun! I've enjoyed Wikipedia as a baseline to get information on a topic although I've cautioned everyone that info needed to be verified. I hadn't thought about developing a wiki as a teaching tool -- but now, I'M THERE!!

I have something called Library Club that I started last year for the classes that I see twice a week. Centers with magazines, checkers, games on the computer, sets of reference books that the students might not look at otherwise, vocabulary games, etc. are available; students change centers after 15 minutes. Next year, as I stated in an earlier posting, I'm going to call it, LIFELONG LEARNERS CLUB.

I think it would be really neat to have a wikis up on computers where the students would contribute to a creative writing exercise. Each story would start with the same opening paragraph but each student would add a paragraph. The completed stories would be read and compared.

And I'm going to come up w/other lessons as well. This is good stuff!

THING 15

Library 2.0

Well, it's just gotta be. I really want to incorporate the concepts of "User-centered Library" and "User participation in creation of content & community" into my library mindset.

However, I am somewhat slowed down by the reality of my educational situation. I love my elementary school & have support from the principal & teachers. But our mission has to be different because of our students. We are an "overflow school" and 0ur population is made up of students whose zoned schools don't have enough room for them. Our population is 95% Hispanic for whom English is a second language and, until the 2009-2010 school year, all textbooks for K-4th grade were in Spanish. All of our students are on free breakfasts and lunches.

Our primary responsibility is to raise the reading level of our students. I see every student every week; 2/3 of them twice a week. I have few students -- regardless of grade -- who read above a 3rd grade level.

Our students do have computer classes and the library did receive 8 new laptops last year. I do have a SMARTBoard & am trying to incorporate its use into my instruction time.

I need to focus on change but I mustn't be discouraged when my steps are small.

THING 14

Don't know what I'd do w/out the Dancing Librarian! She has walked me through choosing the correct profile so now! I'll go back to THING 12 & start making comments. BUT I DIGRESS. . . .

This is about Technorati & Tags. I've watched the videos & read the postings but I'm not quite a believer yet. I understand some pretty amazing things: 1) the number of blogs are doubling every 6 months; 2) blogs present the "human experience raw & uncut." 3) blogging presents a way to know what "real people" -- unedited -- are thinking about what is going on in their lives. 4) bloggers talk about happenings that don't make it to CNN or NBC. 5) blogging builds communication & community 6) people check their RSS 7 times a day!!

My problem is that I'm overwhelmed w/the amount of information -- and opionions -- that are available on blogs & I'm not sure I want to deal w/info that hasn't been filtered. Stream of consciousness & blithering forms of communication are frequently a waste of time. There are nuggets in there -- but who can spend all day on the computer reading through dribble to get a nugget?

And community & communication is a wonderful thing -- but I have teachers, students, family, neighbors & friends for whom I find it difficult to have time. How can I add a jillion blog friends?

Ah, well -- this is just the ranting of a soon-to-be 65 yr old who is trying to keep up!

I did do the exercise about searching for "School Library Learning 2.0" in blog posts, tags & blog directory. I did find a blog I intend to add to my RSS -- The Unquiet Librarian.

THING 13

This is a good tool and one that I want to use this school year. At my HISD elementary school, I see all the students each week on an ancillary schedule which provides the planning period for all classroom teachers. The 3 ancillary teachers (libarian, PE coach & computer teacher) did a couple of projects last year when we combined our efforts.

With the 4th grade students, we divided them into pairs and had them create a breakfast cereal (PE = research into nutrition) for which they came up with a commercial. The commercial had to feature each student in an oral presentation in English that was taped and shown. This gave our Spanish-speaking students an opportunity write in and to hear themselves speak in English.

With the 5th grade students, each was to memorize a poem or speech and was taped presenting it. They then voted on the students who did the best and these 3 performed at a program.

We have been talking about doing research projects and I believe that the bookmarking & tagging will allow us to develop a project incorporating social studies topics that can be accessed by students in different environments. I don't have a complete plan yet -- but I'm seeing it!

THING 12

OK --here I am posting about THING 12 although I really haven't completed the mission. IMPOSSIBLE, you say? Well, I guess so but something's not working for me because I don't know which "profile" to choose to that I can comment on the blogs I'm trying to follow. If anyone knows, I'd LOVE some input here.

I'm gonna start THING 12 & add to it later.

1. After reading the articles about blogging & creating communities, the 2 points that made the most sense to me are: a) One should respond creatively and thoughtfully to a blog. "Yeah!" or "You go girl," while being supportive and affirming an opinion, really do not add to the discussion which is the point of having a blog in the first place. b) I like the idea of responding to those who leave comments on one's blog. ( Which is something I would do if I knew which profile to use -- see gripe above!!) I did receive a comment about my posting on THING 11 but have been unable send my response yet. Surely, I'll figure this out.

3. I have been following 2 blogs that are not part of Library2Play. One is written by the HouChron columnist, Leon Hale. I've read his columns since I moved to Houston & am always entertained by them. The other is name Lisa's History Room and has musings about history and current events. It had a few too many entries about Michael Jackson that I didn't spend much time on but usually has interesting tidbits.

4. I have posted comments on 5 L2P blogs -- The Dancing Librarian; 2 many books 2 little time; sic em bears; Becky's 23; Book Egg. There is good information on each of these -- but following blogs is awfully time consuming. 2 many BLOGS! 2 little time!

THING 11

Now this is neat! LibraryThing may save my marriage because it looks like a wonderful way to catalog our personal library. My wonderful husband, Jim, often points out that our library is completely unorganized and he doesn't understand why since his wife is a librarian, his daughter is a librarian, and his next-door neighbor is a librarian. We really need to find a way to know what books we have. Earlier this year, we found 3 copies of the same book -- so we really need to figure this out.

Looks like LibraryThing will do it. Particularly since it can be accessed from a cell phone so that we can see if we own a particular book before we buy something.

I liked the way I can tag books, too. I have a KINDLE which I bought for my husband but he doesn't use it so I do. He has very strong ideas about NOT putting bookstores out of business. So this way, I can tell if we have a hard copy or not.

I looked at the groups -- oh, my!-- one could be overwhelmed! Crime, Thriller & Mystery is my favorite because I was able to learn when the next alphabet mystery by Sue Grafton is going to be published. I've read them all.

This was fun -- and I wasn't frustrated like I was for THING 10.

THING 10b

Well, I'm moving on. Can't get anything to go to my blog. Either the website doesn't exist or -- like WORDLE -- I can't get it to show on my blog. At least I know how to print a WORDLE which is how I'll probably use it at school anyway. I think it will be a great way to introduce -- or reinforce -- vocabulary words for science.

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

THING 10

Well, no, I haven't published my WORDLE yet. What am I doing wrong???
OK -- Have I done this thing? I've been trying to publish my WORDLE for hours & do not seem to be successful. So let's see if I've finally done it.

THING 9

RSS more. . . .

I think that THINGS 8 & 9 have taken more time than any of the other THINGS -- and, really, this is one of the problems w/blogs & the internet for me: I can spend hours on it & have a wonderful time but all of a sudden -- I've lost a day! Both of these assignments have been educational (is is OK to admit that I didn't know what RSS meant before I started these assignments?) but they did take a long time.

I tried to use the same topic, Windfall Exemption Provision, whenever possible in order to have consistency in using the search engines.

1) Which SEARCH tool was easiest to use? I found Bloglines and Edublog both easy to use;

2) Suprglu and Topix.net not so much. Suprglu didn't really have anything that I found helpful and Topix was too inclusive in its search.

3) The most useful one was Edublog. I added 2 blogs from it to my RSS account.

THING 8

1) RSS Time! I think this is going to be very helpful although, I fear that this will lead to the demise of the traditional newspaper delivered to my door every morning. AND I do love reading the newspaper! My husband gets his news via the internet but I've held out for paper -- at least for right now. I do like the fact that I can have GOOGLEREADER send me information on the topics in which I have interest -- particularly the Windfall Elimination Provision. This law seems so unfair to me because it limits the amount of social security payments I can receive if I choose to receive payments from the Teacher Retirement System of Texas. I keep thinking that someone will decide the schoolteachers shouldn't be punished & am grateful that Google will track this topic for me.

2) Actually, right this minute, I'm not sure how often I'll look at GOOGLE READER at school. Time is so fleeting there! But I know how to access it so can do so if I ever get caught up or bored.

3) I have to think about how RSS can be used in school. Frankly, I think that one could spend a lot of time reading blogs -- and, frequently, I find that I'm not interested in the stream-of-consciousness musing that goes on in many blogs. I've also just finished the new Michael Connelly novel, The Scarecrow, in which the bad guy figured out one character's passwords because of the information on the character's blog. Blogs are out there for the world to read.

However, I'll keep thinking about using this technology as an educational tool; often, my creativity has to perculate for a while before it kicks in!

THING 7

OK -- now I'm in love. I've known that Google was cool -- but now I know HOW cool since I have discovered PowerPoint presentations about Dewey for elementary students already on the web! And my lesson plan for Aug is ready because I have the lesson & a SMARTBoard was hung in the library during remodeling. Really neat.

AND the 2nd Google Cool Thing is maps on my phone! I'm not sure how much it will cost me to connect to the internet this way -- but I love having maps! I've got a Magellan but somehow don't always have it with me -- or charged! -- when I need to know where to go.

I'm really having a lot of fun w/this program!

THING 6

OK -- This was REALLY fun! I went to Big Huge Lab & decided to make a Pocket Photo Album. Importing the pictures was easy -- deciphering the folding instructions for the 8.5" x 11" paper gave me pause BUT! I got it! So now I've created a pocket album w/pic from a family event that I shall distribute at our family reunion in July to amuse & amaze all my kith & kin.

AND THEN!! There was information about a PocketMod which is a small book made from another 8.5" x 11" piece of paper. It's a joy for someone (like me) who is addicted to lists & notes. I intend to start the school year w/a lesson about this for Library Club.

As an ancillary teacher, I see every student each week on a M-T-W schedule; then I repeat M on Th & T on F. Library Club was started last year & involves library activities other than checking out books. It has really worked well at Gordon-HISD because conduct on M-T-W determine whether a class is able to participate in Library Club. Activities include reading magazines, playing games (both computer & board), and browsing through reference books.
This year, I want to emphasize doing things that Life-Long Learners need to do and know. I may even call it Life-Long Learners Library Club.

THING 6

OK -- This was really fun! I went to BigHuge

THING 5

FLICKR FLICKR FLICKR! Handy spot for pictures but I'm not overly interested in using it alot. I just don't get excited about taking pictures. HOWEVER -- I am glad that I have been to the site & have used it so that I can add a wonderful picture of Texas bluebonnets to my blog. Aren't we glad we live in Texas?

HURRAY!! Mary Jane & I together are smarter than this computer that's trying to frustrate me! My daughter, Mj (The Dancing Librarian)is my mentor. She has completed THING #6 so she helps when I don't know what to do. I think I have completed THING #3. Except my eyes blink on avatars.yahoo.com & they don't here. Oh, well. I am here!

THING 3

I don't think I created my blog correctly because I never was asked to create an avatar & I want to create an avatar. I need to figure out how to make an avatar & put it on my blog. But I do have a blog & you are reading it now.

THING 2

In THING 2, I am to respond about the easiest and hardest things for me from 7 1/2 HABITS so here goes:

EASIEST: Accepting responsibility for my own learning. This isn't a problem for me because I love challenges and learning new things. I think that the fact that I started a new facet of my career at age 62 instead of retiring is proof of this. I haven't kept up w/the techie things that I'll learn in this program because I don't have a practical application for them. I trust that I'll learn enough that I'll be able to apply what I've learned.

HARDEST: Using technology to my advantage. I don't always take the time to update my skills; if I can accomplish a task -- even if it's not the best way to complete it -- I'll just do things the old way.

I do consider myself a Life-long Learner & am trying to create a way to inspire my students to become captivated w/their ability to LEARN!!

First Attempt at a BLOG

Well, I wonder how I'm going to do??? I'm pleased to start this project of 23 THINGS & have every intention of completing it. But LIFE has a way of changing plans, you know?

I do want to stay up-to-date in THINGS technologically -- so we'll see where I am on August 10 --which will be my 65th birthday.
